Power outages hit Berkeley Heights after fast-moving New Jersey storm

A short but powerful storm knocked out power across Berkeley Heights and added to a large statewide outage event during dangerous heat.

A short but powerful storm ripped through New Jersey late Friday, knocking out power across Berkeley Heights and leaving residents dealing with a dangerous combination: storm damage, darkness, and oppressive heat.

The storm moved quickly, but it hit hard. Across New Jersey, live outage tracking showed well over 200,000 homes and businesses without power late Friday night, with FirstEnergy/JCP&L accounting for the bulk of reported outages. Berkeley Heights is served by JCP&L, and local residents should report outages directly to the utility rather than assuming a neighborhood outage has already been logged.

The timing matters. The National Weather Service's Mount Holly office had warned Friday afternoon that scattered severe thunderstorms could produce locally damaging winds and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. The same briefing also warned that the heat was not routine: heat index values were expected to reach 100 to 115 degrees Friday and 100 to 110 degrees Saturday, with little overnight relief.

That makes power restoration more than a convenience issue. Homes without electricity may also be homes without air conditioning, refrigeration, medical-device charging, sump pumps, internet access, or working garage-door openers. Residents should check on elderly neighbors, people with medical needs, and families with small children.

Berkeley Heights' own storm-resource guidance is direct: report power outages to JCP&L at 1-888-LIGHTSS, or 1-888-544-4877, through FirstEnergy's online outage tools, or by text if already enrolled. Downed wires should be treated as live. Stay away from them and report them to the utility or emergency responders.

The practical rule for tonight is simple: if your power is out, report it; if you see a wire down, stay back; if your home is heating up, get to a cooler place before it becomes a medical problem.

The larger question for the next few days is how quickly JCP&L restores service and whether Berkeley Heights officials provide neighborhood-level updates for residents who do not have reliable access to outage maps. During a heat event like this, timely communication is not just customer service. It is public safety.
